Window decor: what our store can offer you

Publication date:

Based on the shape of the windows of modern houses, the following categories can be roughly distinguished: rectangular and arched, lancet, borrowed from Gothic architecture, and round, as well as paired and bay windows. Each of these windows can be designed differently, taking into account the specific shape, size and method of opening the window frames.

Even the same window can be decorated in different styles depending on the overall style of the room’s interior and even the season. For example, in the summer, especially for cottages and dachas, but also for city apartments, windows are usually decorated with light cotton fabrics. Summer curtains do not require complex designs: these are, as a rule, thin airy curtains with a light pattern. But even they fade during the summer season, so it is better to change summer curtains more often.

There are special designs of curtains designed mainly to protect from the sun - these are roller blinds, the panels of which are rolled into a roll when lifted, and Roman blinds, which fold up like an accordion due to rods inserted at certain intervals. Both roller blinds and Roman blinds are made of dense material and practically perform the function of blinds, as effective protection from the sun.

French curtains, or “awnings” as they are also called, also rise upward, but this happens by folding the curtains along cords threaded into vertically stitched drawstrings. Such curtains usually rise only halfway and they drape beautifully in horizontal waves. They are made from thin, lightweight material and are known to everyone from concert halls. In the recent past, “awnings” were popular in official institutions and even in kindergartens.

The classic version of curtains is a combination of panels of fabrics of different densities, thin and transparent, covering the window and dense, heavy fabrics framing the sides of the window. You can, of course, create a simplified version: hang only a transparent thin curtain. In summer, airy fabric will be most appropriate, but in winter it can create a feeling of coolness even in a warm room.

The design of classic curtains can be quite complex. They may have a lambrequin - a decorative element made of fabric covering the cornice. The lambrequin, in turn, can be soft, hanging freely, or hard. It can also be made of fabric of a contrasting color or texture, trimmed along the edge with fringe or braid.

Swag is a separate part of a lambrequin, which is a semicircle of fabric draped with soft folds.

The methods of attaching curtains to the cornice are also quite varied. Very popular in modern versions of curtains are grommets - holes in the upper part of the curtain, edged with metal, through which the cornice is threaded. Another, also common method, involves the presence of loops or rings, sewn or attached to the curtain with clips. Or you can simply thread a thin metal curtain rod through a drawstring stitched along the top edge of the curtain - this is perhaps the easiest way to attach it.

Finishing curtains along the edges with fringe, braid or lace gives it a formal look. Such curtains will decorate classic, antique or modern interiors.

You can transform a curtain using applique. If you choose it according to the pattern of the wallpaper or furniture upholstery, then the curtains will help tie the interior together into a single whole. An equally interesting effect can be achieved if a transparent thin mesh is hung on top of a thick and heavy curtain. Then the pattern on the fine mesh will become embossed, and the thick curtain will gain volume.

Thick and heavy curtains made of silk or velvet need lining. It protects against fading, helps keep its shape, and hides the seams on the back side. The lining can be matched to the tone of the main fabric, or it can be in a contrasting color, which will create a unique decorative effect. Thin, transparent cotton, tulle or avant-garde mesh models do not need a lining.

And another way to hang curtains goes back to the fashionable traditions of the Arab East. Just two centuries ago, Europe admired luxurious silks and velvets, and this fashion, although sometimes retreating, never completely disappeared. And the eastern traditions of decorating furniture with fabric have taken root and found admirers in European homes. Pillows and curtains, canopies and bedspreads, furniture covers and carpets - all these are newcomers from the East. A large number of folds flowing freely in the fabric is the basic principle of decoration in this style. The abundance of original ornaments and rich colors is also a characteristic detail of such interiors.

The cornice on which the curtains are attached should also be given attention. Their wide variety on the modern market provides a wide choice, the basis of which should be the correspondence of the chosen curtain rod to the curtain model and the general style of the decor.

The style of the cornice is determined by the accessories: brackets, holders, rings and tips. They are very diverse: pyramids, balls, arrows, leaves, snakes and so on. The materials are just as diverse - primarily metal, wood and glass.

Forged and wooden cornices will fit into a country-style interior, giving it a romantic mood. And for linen curtains that are now popular, models of cornices in the form of linen rope are suitable.

For classic interiors with expensive multi-layer window drapes, bronze or brass cornices with gilded tips in the form of a lion's head, arrows or cones are needed. Accessories and holders in the form of lush flowers or heraldic lilies will be a wonderful addition to them.

Ultra-modern cornices use the latest technology and combine wide design possibilities and various lifting or sliding mechanisms with remote control.

On the contrary, there are those that imitate ancient wrought-iron cornices, trimmed with time-cracked details made of ivory or aged copper. They will harmoniously complement antique interiors.

In general, when choosing fabrics for curtains and their models, as well as purchasing a cornice and accessories for it, it is important to remember that the area occupied by drapery fabrics is quite significant and therefore, a mistake in such a choice can destroy the harmony of the interior. It is better to listen to the advice of a professional designer in this matter.
